GetMoreJobs

“Our mission isn’t just about getting people to buy products locally; we want to make sure that a personal service is provided to the consumer and that a stronger community is created as a result. These things are best achieved through the employment of local people.”

We want to create more local jobs for local people and particularly important to us is getting unemployed young people out of the long-term unemployment the recent
economic shortfall has created, and into lasting jobs.

At GetMoreLocal we know what a local, young, team – even one with relatively little on-the-job experience – can bring to the workplace. Through the Future Jobs Fund GetMoreLocal employed a staff of 70 local people in early 2010, all aged between 18 and 24. Many of our team are graduates who’d been abandoned to the stale process of claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance for months - over a year in some cases. These young people, regardless of academic achievement, bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and a wealth of local life experience to the job and every aspect of what we do.

The Future Jobs Fund has now been cut, and this makes it even more important for local businesses to do right by the youth in their area.

The further benefits of a local workforce, of any age or background, are obvious:

The local economy benefits: People tend to spend money in shops close to their workplace, so if someone lives and works in the same area they will be helping to generate greater wealth within that same community.

The customer benefits: There’s no substitute for local knowledge. A local employee knows the area they work in; what sells, how best to sell it and how to communicate with, and inform, the customer. This is what turns an average shopping experience into a great one and inspires ongoing customer loyalty.

The environment benefits: A shorter workday commute means fewer car journeys – reducing carbon emissions – and less pressure on public transport services at peak times.
